Jesus in the Lotus
The Mystical Doorway between Christianity and Yogic Spirituality
Russill Paul
New World Library 04/09 Paperback $14.95
ISBN: 9781577316275

Russill Paul trained as a Christian monk and yogi under the direction of Bede Griffiths and is the author of The Yoga of Sound. A faculty member at Wisdom University in San Francisco, he blends Indian and contemporary music in his recordings and performances. (Visit him online at www.russillpaul.com.)

Paul sees himself as an interspiritual seeker. He was raised Roman Catholic in South India and became a Benedictine monk. During his studies with Bede Griffiths, whom he calls "the renowned spiritual maverick," he decided that Griffiths was the perfect combination of Christian mystic and Hindu holy man. From him he learned the benefits of both religions and how they can work together forming a truly flourishing human being.

Paul wants to see a reframing of the Christian path as one that is wisdom-based rather than emphasizing salvation. This tradition can be enhanced by Eastern spirituality which offers a focus on the immanence of God, a more balanced view of Divine gender, an appreciation of the body as a vehicle for spiritual realization, an accent on union rather than human separation, and a greater tolerance for all religions. Paul then explores the mystical dimensions of both Christianity and Hinduism and the fact that both agree that discernment is a gift of Divine grace. In a chapter titled "Melding Traditions from the East and West," the author points out further meeting points and concludes:

"This is one reason why the marriage of Christianity and Yoga is important. Taken by themselves, Yoga is in danger of becoming self-preoccupied, and Christianity too self-denigrating. Brought together, the two traditions can help create a better balance between sanctity and mysticism."

Jesus in the Lotus makes a good case for the benefits that can accrue to Christianity and to Hinduism by more cooperation and mutual understanding. This book also heals some of the wounds that have resulted from intolerance, lack of knowledge, and prejudice. Be sure to check out the closing section containing interspiritual practices, resources, and a select bibliography.
