The Marriage of East and West: Exploring the Hindu-Christian Dialog

Many yoga practitioners, disillusioned with traditional Christianity, have found immense fulfillment in yoga while many practicing Christians have an interest in yoga and are curious about Indian spirituality but are uncomfortable about its techniques and philosophies. Yet, the mysticism of yoga practice and depth spirituality in Hinduism is in strong resonance with the mystical experience and essential teachings of Jesus. The objective of this course is to engage in the inter-spiritual connections between Yoga and mystical Christianity whilst exploring deep levels of consciousness through Eastern meditation practices such as mantra and yoga.

Drawing from the Upanisads, the repository Hinduism’s loftiest spiritual experiences, the Bhagavat Gita, which is the New Testament of yoga, and the seminal writings of visionary Benedictine monk, Bede Griffiths, as well as renowned Christian lay-monk, Wayne Teasdale, who together explored the deepest correlations between Hinduism and Christianity, we will engage in inter-spiritual dialog between these two great traditions and forge our own informed spiritual perspective for the 21st century.

Never before in human history has there been such need for Eastern and Western religious traditions to understand one another and respond to the challenges that arise from their unique revelations. As the rise of fundamentalism rears its ugly head in both hemispheres of the globe, the Hindu-Christian comparison is an excellent place to start.
