KATRINA YOGIS AFFECTED

November 2, 2005

Dear friends,

As many of you know, I was hoping to do a benefit event to
raise funds for people affected by hurricane Katrina.
Foremost in my mind was a student of mine, Sean Johnson,
who was evacuated from New Orleans with his family during
the disaster.

TOUR: After Hurricane Katrina, Sean has been touring and
giving benefit kirtan concerts at yoga studios across the
east coast to raise money for Habitat for Humanity (who
will be rebuilding many of the homes in the poorer
neighborhoods of New Orleans), for the sustenance of his
New Orleans yoga studio, Wild Lotus Yoga
(www.wildlotusyoga.com), scheduled to reopen next week, and
to help his parents, who lost their home and business to
the storm. He and his brother, Matt, are presently on the
west coast giving concerts through November in Ojai, San
Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Santa
Barbara, Ventura, Fresno, Portland, and Seattle.

My intention was to do a special benefit event with him
when he was in the Bay Area to raise funds for his needs as
well as those of his extended family and community, but,
unfortunately, our schedules didn’t fit.

I am requesting those of you who get this newsletter to
help his endeavors.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

Check out his schedule at www.seanjohnsonkirtan.com
Attend his events if you are in the area.
Tell friends in the area about his events.
Buy his CDs and share them with others.

I’M DONATING PROFITS: I also want you to know that all
profits this month, November 2005, resulting from the sale
of my album Spirit Bridges, will go entirely to benefit
this intention. You can buy a box of 10 at wholesale price
from my website that you can use to give away as Christmas
gifts. If you have a store, better still. You can buy a
larger quantity for the Christmas season.

MORE ABOUT SEAN JOHNSON: Sean personally trained with me
when he went through the graduate program in spirituality
at Naropa University’s Oakland campus in the late 90’s.
Over a period of several months, in addition to taking my
classes in the program, he studied assiduously South Indian
music as well as mantra with me privately. He was the type
of student that teachers love to have: passionate,
energized, sincerely applying himself, diligent, asking
probing questions, committed, and more. It was with great
pride that I followed his work as he developed a strong
practice of hatha yoga, started his own yoga studio, formed
a kirtan band, recorded CD’s, built a community and
traveled to share with others what he loves and practices.
What I am most impressed with is his evolution in music and
chant. Starting at the most elementary level, he has grown
at a phenomenal rate of progress and is an inspiration for
anyone who has any doubts about their musical possibilities
at any stage.

“Sean brings home the devotion in his voice: this is bhakti
in full measure. He is also living proof of the power of
the hatha yogi who also understands the power of sound.
This, I believe, is the future of yoga, especially in the
West, where a unique yogic culture is being developed,
authentic in its spirit yet meaningful in the form of its
expression.”
