OUR PILGRIMAGE EXTENSION
July 28, 2007
Dear friends, I hope this finds you well. As promised several months ago, this newsletter connects you to a report on the extension to our pilgrimage in India this year. In addition, I share some exciting news about my upcoming workshop and kirtan at Kripalu Yoga Center in Lennox, MA, and an invitation to post your thoughts and suggestions on a Guest book page. SOUTH INDIA EXTENSION IN 2007 You can view the full report and photo collection on our website at: www.russillpaul.com/ext07.html We conducted a special extension to our pilgrimage in South India this year (2007). This was an extremely powerful experience for those of us who undertook it, for we prepared for it with a five-day meditation intensive exploring the nature of silence, that was conducted at the ashram, and then journeying on toward a mini-pilgrimage titled “Off the Beaten Path” that took us to some powerful sacred hotspots in South India. Our mini-pilgrimage included the mount Arunachala, a holy mountain associated with Shiva; Ramana Ashram, where the great sage Ramana Maharsihi lived and taught; Arunachaeshawar, an ancient and famous Shiva temple associated with fire: the great Nataraja (Lord of the Dance) Temple of Chidambaram, which is considered Shiva’s eternal dancing ground (this temple is associated with the element space); the philosopher Shree Aurobindo’s Ashram in Pondicherry, a charming ex-French colony with a Mediterranean feel; Auroville, an extraordinary experiment of a global village in the truest sense that is endorsed by UNESCO; the extravagant temple architecture of Kanchipuram (a pilgrimage spot on par with Benares and just as famous for its silk); and the Shankara Matt, where the equivalent of a Hindu pope presides over the most respected monastic order in India. KRIPALU WORKSHOP AND KIRTAN, SEP 7 - 9 Second, I want to inform you about my upcoming workshop and kirtan at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health that is coming up in September. I am excited by the musicians who are going to accompany me this weekend. Weekend workshop title: The Ecstasy of Chant Where: KRIPALU YOGA CENTER IN LENNOX, MA When: Friday, September 7 to Sunday September 9. Please visit the events page on our website for detailed information on this workshop: http://www.russillpaul.com/calendar.html I would love for you to join me for a rollicking good weekend at this yoga retreat facility, for I am being assisted by two absolutely fantastic Indian musicians. Ajay and Pankaj Sharma have presented a number of events together with me and they are not only great musicians but great people as well. They are both deeply immersed in India’s spirituality and yet tremendously open to all other traditions. Additionally, September is a great time to enjoy the beautiful Berkshire Mountains, and what better way to do this than while being high on chant. The evening of Kirtan: Getting High on Mantra, that extends to the larger community also includes additional musicians, Adrian Bennet and the Kripalu Drummers who are also phenomenal musicians. This is a very special evening so bring a friend or two with you.
