GRATITUDE AND NOTTINGHAM
April 22, 2009
Dear friend,
I never realized the strength of the connection that I had to those my mailing list until now. Over the course of the previous weekend, all throughout the facilitation of my Easter retreat at Kripalu, I was deeply moved and felt much love and support from so many of you through the large number of emails comforting me on the loss of my father. I managed my grief pretty well during the daytime, since I did not wish to lay that upon the participants in my retreat. However, at night, when I felt it most, I read every single one of your emails before I went to sleep each night and it gave me great joy and comfort. I will treasure these messages for the rest of my life. In fact, every message that I received will be included in a memorial book that I intend to create about my dad, which I will share with my family in India, when I next visit them. To protect your privacy, your email address will not be included.
My last public event this spring is in Nottingham, NH at the church of Reverend Ben Fowler. Ben is a Unitarian Universalist and therefore completely nonsectarian. His church, Nottingham community Church, is an intimate space situated in an idyllic old New England town. The church itself was built in the late 1800’s and is among the oldest in the region. As I mentioned earlier, Ben is also a fantastic musician.
The weekend consists of a string of events beginning with a concert on Friday night with Ben, myself and an extraordinary musician named Marty Quinn. Marty is a Bahai, a recent world religion that is all about unity and equality. He is a brilliant tabla player who trained with some of the finest musicians in India. He is also a computer wizard and scientist who has been translating hard scientific data drawn from space and the natural organic world into listenable music.
There are some wonderful video clips on my website from the music we played together last year that you are welcome to view. http://www.russillpaul.com/livemusic.html
On Saturday, we have an all day workshop that journeys into the evening. During the day we will focus on healing power of sound, chanting and dancing and meditating together in this beautiful church with extraordinary acoustics and light that filters through the solitary circular stained-glass window above the altar that resembles, “the eye through which God sees us and through which we see God”. In fact, this is the only visible sacred symbol in the sanctuary apart from a small and plain gold cross. It is quite magical. Chanting in that space when it is dark is even more powerful. Can you imagine chanting to Durga and Kali in that environment?
On Sunday, Ben and I dedicate the Sunday morning service at the church interspirituality, which is the theme of my new book Jesus and the Lotus: the Mystical Doorway between Christianity and You Can Spirituality. The two of us engage in dialogue around this subject, which is the pressing need of our time, that is, moving from mutual tolerance to mutual appreciation between the world’s spiritual traditions.
On Sunday afternoon, we take the interspiritual theme together with the healing power of sound and engage in more chanting, movement and mediation together. A number of pilgrims who travelled with us to India are going to be there so I am really looking forward to being with them and with others too. If you can make it, or no friends or family in the area who could benefit from such an event, I would love for you and them to be there.

That is it for now. As I mentioned when I returned from India last month, I have a lot that is happening this year, so you can expect a few extra emails in the next couple of months: I hope you do not mind.
With my love and best wishes,
In One Spirit,
