NOTTINGHAM COMMUNITY CHURCH, NOTTINGHAM, NEW HAMPSHIRE THE ROLE OF SOUND IN HEALING AND ENLIGHTENMENT This is my fourth consecutive year at this historic Unitarian Universalist church. Ben Fowler, the minister, is both musician and spiritual teacher. Each year, he brings together a great group of musicians from the area and we make beautiful music and chant in this charming little church in beautiful New Hampshire. During this weekend, we will explore how sound can be used for spiritual and therapeutic purposes in our personal and spiritual lives. Ben and his wife Sarah have journeyed with us on our pilgrimage to India and so this event serves as reunion spot for many who have travelled with us on pilgrimage to India. Ben is also a dedicated student of Yogic Mystery School. Sunday afternoon on May 16 is dedicated to the teaching in Yogic Mystery School so students in the program as well as those interested in the program should consider attending this session. SPACE IS LIMITED. For more information or to reserve your place, please contact Reverend Ben Fowler at 207-351-1985 or email him at revbenfowler@gmail.com.
THE PROGRAM SCHEDULE Friday evening, May 14: Kirtan concert with guest musicians Saturday morning, May 15: All day Chanting Workshop and Retreat Saturday evening, May 15: Chanting in the Divine Darkness: a musical meditation experience Sunday morning, May 16: Church service (optional for workshop attendees) Sunday afternoon, May 16: Yogic Mystery School Satsangha
JONATHAN GOLDMAN INTERVIEW I had a wonderful radio interview with Jonathan Goldman. You can hear the show, archived on 04/14 at http://www.healthylife.net/RadioShow/archiveJG.htm Interestingly, we ended up speaking quite a bit about Jesus and the east, which is quite a twist since Jonathan is Jewish.
PRACTICE Letting go is easier said than done. Get comfortable in a chair or in your meditation cushion. Relax your body and watch your breath. Breathe normally. Integrate a simple two-sound syllable into your breath. I have provided some examples below but you can always design your own. Two-syllable mantras are very effective in facilitating letting-go. The first syllable is sounded as the body inhales, the second as the body exhales. Integrate the sounds into your breath, meaning that you hear and feel them at the same time. Examples of two-syllable mantras: SO-HAM, a classic Hindu mantra meaning, “That (Ultimate Reality) I am”. YE-SU, the name of Jesus in Sanskrit (or Hebrew, YE-SHUA or IESUS, Latin or IESOUS, Greek) Or try English phrases such as GOD-IS or LOVE-IS or I-AM
LOCAL ADVENTURES The wildflowers in Texas are just wonderful. Each year we seem to find a new species. The highlight of our local adventures since our return has been the Austin Botanical Gardens at Zilker Park. It was a garden festival with lots of plants and education on plants as well as a great Bonsai show and an orchid display. It was great to actually walk inside The Swedish Pioneer Cabin was built about 1840 in Govalle by S. M. Swenson, the first Swedish settler who came to Texas in 1838. Apparently twelve people, most of them children lived in this tiny space. http://www.zilkergarden.org/
Enjoy life.
In One Spirit,
Russill
