SACRED UNION RETREAT:
This special retreat takes place at Hari Om Mandir in Downingtown, PA. Hari Om Mandir, is a consecrated Radha-Krishna temple built by the Sharma family, their love offering to honor God’s love in their life and which they use to share their love with others. I have been presenting retreats at this sacred location for about five years together with Ajay and Pankaj Sharma, aka The Bhakti Boys.
The theme of this year’s retreat is Sacred Union and what better space to explore this theme than a temple dedicated to the love of Radha and Krishna, Rama and Sita. Union is the goal of all prayer, meditation and yoga. The Hindu tradition has a long history of celebrating this union, not only in the eternal relationships of Gods and Goddesses but also in the sacred androgyny of ?rdhan??vara, the half Shiva, aka Ume?vara, whose image adorns the flyers for this event.
We are all aware of the powerful drive within us to feel a sense of completeness. We look to our relationships – spouses, lovers and significant others – to experience this completeness. The Hindu spiritual tradition, as it does with everything, states that the completeness of this sacred union is to be found within us, not outside us. The more we discover it within, the more it becomes reflected in our key relationships.
This retreat offers us the opportunity to explore this sacred dimension of union within ourselves. What we can hope for through such an exploration is to nurture our core relationships from the inside. We can then bring healing and greater love to these core relationships through meditating on the archetypal polarities within us. This may sound abstract, but so much of yoga and esoteric spirituality is precisely about the unification of opposites. The ancients had a strong sense of the union of opposites. In the west, it can be traced to the philosopher Heraclitus in the fifth century BCE. However, it was scientist and mystic, Nicolas of Cusa, in the 15th century who brought it strongly into the forefront of western spirituality with his notion of coincidentia oppositorum, a Latin phrase that suggests the union of opposites and the transcendence and oneness that results from such a union.
This state is no different from Samadhi, the goal of yoga practice, in which a deep absorption is brought about through the union of opposites, of Ha and Tha, of Sun and Moon. During this retreat we will utilize the power of sacred sound, through powerful mantras and ecstatic chants, to tap this sacred union which is a dynamic eternal process always going on. We will dance the experience and move into an energized state in which we feel absorbed by this sacred union. And we will explore archetypal images and sacred myths to feed our experience.
If you have an interest in joining us on OCT 14 -16, we believe that the weekend will contribute depth and presence to your deepest relationships.
In One Spirit,
