The Gypsies
People of the Spirit

It is strongly believed and well documented that the gypsies originated in Rajasthan, Northwestern India. In South India, they are known as Korathis; and, like gypsies all over the world, they are a persecuted lot. These people often earn their living selling trinkets that they fashion with their own hands. We have befriended one of these communities.

On our maiden voyage, a young gypsy man selling drums claimed that he knew a short cut to a temple we were trying to find but instead, he steered us through this gypsy settlement, a much longer route. We were overwhelmed by their supplication for alms and went past them quickly, feeling manipulated.Later, after we had processed this experience as a group, we decided to return and make amends for our lack of sensitivity.

A small group of us set out together and connected with the headman and other elders of the village. Our animated discussions were witnessed by the rest of the community who gathered around us with unabashed curiosity. It so turned out that their village had been burned and we were able to help them extend the rental on their living settlement and also to help them purchase materials to manufacture their trinkets.

This was not a handout, but a more like grant given to a whole community, asking that they use it toward their independence. Yes, we were manipulated, but not by the gypsy man. It was the hidden Divinity working through him that was teaching us, opening our hearts. In reality, we received far more than we gave. The gypsies now call us their "friends" and this is very healing for a community that has few friends. This is what India does to us. She heals us and opens us in unpredictable ways.

On one of our later pilgrimages, a the gypsy bard sang ecstatic songs as he beat on an old saucepan while the women and children danced excitedly around him. On and on he uninhibitedly poured out his heart and soul to their clan goddess, Kali, the dark mother who devours injustice and untruth.

Here's the wife of the old bard. She loves to drown him out whenever he starts to sing. The two of them together are indeed a powerhouse of sound. When joined by the extended choral members of the clan, you will discover chakras that you never even knew existed in you!
