Sacred Monuments
Poetry in stone.

One of the highlights of our pilgrimage is absorbing the energy of ancient objects which, once introduced into our consciousness, adds to the power and mystery of the mantras we practice. This tiger cave was once a performance arena, the little niche functioning as the stage.

Here, you see an intricately carved rock face depicting the flow of the holy river Ganga from the penance of a yogi known as Bhagiratha. He can be seen with his hands joined in a yoga gesture, palms joined high above his head as he stands on one leg. This classic yoga posture was often partnered by mantras in the ancient Hindu world.

Many of the ancient shrines that we explore have amazing acoustics that add to our experience of sacred sound. Here you see an ancient cave auditorium indented for performances of sacred music and dance.

This beautiful niche carved out of a single rock features an ancient image of Shiva. Located along the shoreline, the shrine can only be accessed when the tide is out.

Here is the statue of Shiva cut into the rock face of the niche featured above; it is typical of many ancient shrines and temples in India. His hand is raised in benediction using a yoga gesture to confer a blessing upon all who approach his presence.

Nandi, the bull, is Shiva's devoted assistant and cosmic vehicle. He is invariably always featured as part of a Shiva temple complex. Devotees whisper their prayers into the ears of Nandi with the absolute assurance that it will reach the heart of Shiva.

An ancient temple to the goddess Parvati, symbol of absolute power and consort of Shiva, it now lies partially buried by sand. Shakti is pure energy and the form of goddess power. She is the most prevalent deity power of South India
