The Holy River Cauvery
Ganges of the South
|
The Cauvery, aka "the Ganges of the South,” is an ancient and sacred body of water associated with the goddess. Our meditation sessions at dusk, each alternate evening, takes place in this sacred setting.

The banks of the Cauvery are lined with beautiful coconut trees, mango groves and a Eucalyptus forest, ideally suited for reflective walks or to sit and contemplate the flowing water. Towering mountains rise in the distance, many adorned with temples and shrines.

It is wonderful to watch village life happen around the river. People wash their bodies and their clothes, pray on its banks and in its warm waters, and, like the holy Ganges, she washes away our transgressions. It is our faith, however, not water, that cleanses us.

The flow of water is controlled so that farmers in many districts get their fair share. Here, you see a dry section from a mountain top, one that we climb on pilgrimage to pay homage to Ganesha, the power of God that remvoes obstacles on our spiritual journey.
